Suntory Unveils Exclusive “The Kogei Collection Japanese Kimono Edition” at International Airports
Suntory has made waves in the whisky world with the launch of its inaugural shop-in-shop travel retail boutique at Lotte Duty Free in Terminal 3 of Singapore Changi Airport. This exclusive space serves as the debut for the highly anticipated “The Kogei Collection Japanese Kimono Edition,” featuring two groundbreaking releases: Yamazaki Peated Malt Spanish Oak and Hakushu Peated Malt Spanish Oak. This limited edition collection is renewed every two years with a completely new package design.
Crafted under the expert guidance of Suntory’s fifth-generation Chief Blender, Shinji Fukuyo, this collection marks a significant departure from traditional Japanese whisky. Both the Yamazaki and Hakushu expressions are non-age-stated, peated malts matured in Spanish oak casks. The simultaneous release of two whiskies using identical peated malt and Spanish oak is a rare occurrence, offering a unique opportunity to compare and contrast the distinct characteristics of each distillery.
A Fusion of Whisky and Art
To complement the exceptional whiskies, Suntory has partnered with Chiso (千總), a renowned Kyoto Yuzen kimono manufacturer with a legacy dating back to 1555. Chiso’s traditional bokashi (gradation) dyeing technique has been employed to adorn the bottles, creating a visually stunning representation of the whisky’s narrative. The gradient effect of bokashi dyeing symbolizes the harmonious fusion of whisky and art.
Yamazaki Peated Malt Spanish Oak: This expression evokes the tranquility of the three rivers (Katsura, Uji, and Kizu) surrounding the Yamazaki distillery. The golden patterns on the bottle represent drifting clouds, adding an elegant touch.
The Science Behind the Flavors
Yamazaki Peated Malt Spanish Oak – Kogei Collection Japanese Kimono Edition incorporates peated malt, renowned for its smoky flavor profile. The use of Spanish oak casks imparts a rich, deep character to the spirit, introducing layers of complexity such as dark mocha, raisins, and almonds. Maturation in these casks results in a smooth, creamy texture with a pronounced smoky character, complemented by notes of rich roasted cocoa and bittersweet caramel baking spice. The Spanish oak also contributes to a deeper color, giving the Yamazaki expression a reddish hue. Bottled at 43% ABV, this whisky offers a balanced and refined drinking experience.
While other peated whiskies, such as those from Islay, are known for their intense smokiness, Yamazaki Peated Malt Spanish Oak presents a more refined and balanced flavor profile. The use of Spanish oak casks adds a complexity not typically found in other peated whiskies.
