The Kanosuke Single Malt 2023 Limited Edition is the fourth limited edition whisky from Kanosuke, released in 2023.

A key characteristic is the use of peated malt, whereas the other Kanosuke lineups typically feature non-peated malt.

The spirit for this edition was distilled between 2018 and 2019 at the Kanosuke Distillery using their unique three copper pot stills and peated malt. Following distillation, it was matured primarily in shochu re-charred casks and sherry casks, along with several other types of casks. After maturing for over three years, multiple casks were vatted and bottled at a cask strength of 59% alcohol by volume.

This single malt Japanese whisky embodies Kanosuke Distillery’s concept of “MELLOW LAND, MELLOW WHISKY,” with the malt whiskies married together in exquisite balance. Please enjoy its mellow sweetness and long-lasting smoky finish.

Kanosuke Single Malt 2023 Limited Edition Tasting Note

The liquid has a deep yellow-amber hue, despite its relatively short aging period.

Nose: The initial aroma is smoky, followed by notes of banana, custard cream, cinnamon candy, and iburigakko (smoked daikon pickles).

Palate: While there is an alcohol presence, the mouthfeel is surprisingly smooth for its 59% ABV. It offers refined sweetness reminiscent of red bean paste and brown sugar candy, complemented by yatsuhashi (cinnamon rice crackers), smoked nuts, salted caramel, black tea, and blood orange.

Finish: Notes of summer citrus and Sichuan pepper emerge, leading into a woody, lingering smokiness reminiscent of a dying campfire.

Overall: The use of peated malt as the key component in the Kanosuke Single Malt 2023 Limited Edition has introduced an extra layer of complexity to its signature mellow sweetness. Upon first nosing, the smokiness rushes forward, but as the whisky sits in the glass, it gradually softens, revealing refined sweet aromas. On the palate, the smokiness is more subdued than in the aroma, but it steadily builds in the finish, with subtle roasted and smoky notes creating a wonderfully comforting aftertaste.
