Nikka Malt Club Bottling Note
Nikka Malt Club was introduced as a successor to the popular “All Malt” whisky, with a focus on creating a more refined and accessible product. Like All Malt, Malt Club is a whiskey blended with malt whisky and coffey malt. The main difference between All Malt and Malt Club is the higher proportion of Coffey malt in Malt Club. There is no significant difference in terms of aging period. Nikka Malt Club was first released in 1990 and was discontinued in 2015.
This whisky is produced using the “All Malt” method, which involves blending malt whiskies distilled in both pot stills and Coffey stills. The Coffey still, named after its inventor Aeneas Coffey, is a type of continuous still that allows for a smoother and more consistent distillation process. By using malted barley as the primary ingredient and employing both pot still and Coffey still distillation methods, Nikka Malt Club achieves a unique balance of flavors. The whisky is then aged in carefully selected oak casks to enhance its complexity and depth.
Although malt is used to make Coffey malt, whisky distilled using a Coffey still is classified as grain whiskey. Below are the classification differences between malt whisky and Coffey malt whisky:
- Malt distilled using a pot still: Malt Whiskey
- Malt distilled using a Coffey still: Grain Whiskey
Nikka Malt Club is characterized by its smooth and approachable flavor profile. It boasts a sweet and soft aroma with hints of vanilla and fruit, making it a delightful choice for those new to whisky as well as seasoned enthusiasts. The taste is well-balanced, with a gentle sweetness and a clean, crisp finish. Unlike some other whiskies that may have a strong peaty or smoky flavor, Nikka Malt Club is known for its subtlety and elegance, making it a versatile option for various drinking preferences.
When compared to similar whiskies, Nikka Malt Club stands out for its unique use of the Coffey still in the production process. This sets it apart from traditional single malts that rely solely on pot still distillation. The result is a whisky that combines the richness and depth of malt whisky with the smoothness and consistency of grain whisky. In comparison to other Japanese whiskies, such as those from Suntory, Nikka Malt Club offers a distinct flavor profile that is both refined and accessible. While Suntory whiskies like Hibiki and Yamazaki are known for their complexity and bold flavors, Nikka Malt Club provides a more understated and versatile option.
Some whisky enthusiasts may find it too mild or lacking in distinctive character. Additionally, the lower alcohol content of 40% ABV, compared to the 43% ABV of its predecessor “All Malt,” may be seen as a drawback for those who prefer a stronger whisky. However, these criticisms are often balanced by the whisky’s smooth and approachable nature, making it a popular choice for those seeking a more subtle and versatile drink.
Overall, Nikka Malt Club’s unique production methods, balanced flavor profile, and approachable nature make it a interesting choice in the world of Japanese whisky. Malt Club offers a more diverse flavor profile compared to All Malt, making it an excellent choice for those who want to easily enjoy the taste of cafe malt.
