Suntory Toki, a light, fruity blend of Hakushu, Yamazaki, and Chita, is an overseas exclusive. Though Hakushu 12 is noted as a key malt, Chita dominates. Reverse imports make it available, but little pricey, in Japan.
Description
Suntory Toki Bottling Note
Suntory Toki is an overseas exclusive whisky, not available for sale in Japan. It was first released in 2016 for the US and Canadian markets, and in 2018, it began distribution in the UK.
Suntory’s fifth-generation Chief Blender, Shinji Fukuyo, blended whiskies from Hakushu, Yamazaki, and Chita distilleries. While retaining the inherent qualities of whisky, it has a very pale gold color and a generally light flavor. It’s characterized by a refreshing green apple-like aroma and a vanilla sweetness derived from the combination of malt and grain.
Regarding the blend composition of Suntory Toki, it is said that Hakushu 12 Year Old serves as the key malt, blended with Yamazaki and a heavier type of Chita. It’s rare for Suntory to explicitly state the specific aged whiskies used in a blend in their official releases. However, as you’ll notice when you taste it, the Hakushu 12 Year Old presence is very subtle, with Chita being the dominant component. It’s definitely not suitable for those looking to experience the Hakushu 12 Year Old profile.
In Japan, where it’s not officially sold, Suntory Toki is available through reverse imports. However, it’s not considered particularly rare and can be readily purchased online. Due to this reverse import, the price of Suntory Toki in Japan is not inexpensive. If you happen to find it at a local Tesco or similar store in the UK, you may get it for a better price than purchasing it through Whisky Nights.
Suntory Official Bottling Note
THE VIVID HARMONY WHERE OLD MEETS NEW
Toki means “time” in Japanese. It’s a concept rich in meaning the world over, but particularly in Japan where respect for tradition and reinvention sparks a powerful creative energy.
Inspired by that interplay, Suntory Whisky Toki® brings together old and new -the House of Suntory’s proud heritage and its innovative spirit- to create blended Japanese whisky that is both groundbreaking and timeless.
Silky with a subtle sweet and spicy finish.
Suntory Toki Tasting Note
Nose: Basil, green apple, melon, honey
Palate: Grapefruit, green grapes, peppermint, thyme, eventually sweet
Finish: Subtly sweet and spicy finish with a hint of vanilla oak, white pepper and ginger
Overall: Suntory Toki can be enjoyed neat, but it’s especially recommended as a highball. Its refreshing sweetness and crisp finish pair well with food, particularly Japanese cuisine.
