Miyagikyo Single Malt is a Japanese single malt whisky crafted by Nikka Whisky at their Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Masataka Taketsuru, Nikka Whisky’s founder, chose this lush green gorge in the “City of Trees,” Sendai, to create a malt whisky with a distinct character, different from that produced in Yoichi, Hokkaido. Miyagikyo Single Malt is nurtured in this Tohoku mountain region, where two clear streams converge within a deep green valley.

For Miyagikyo Single Malt, soft mountain water with low hardness is used for mashing. The whisky achieves its elegant and fruity profile through the use of pot stills designed to cut heavier components, and a slow, indirect distillation process using steam heat. The addition of lightly peated malt provides an aromatic accent, while sherry cask malt and new oak cask malt contribute to its deep flavor, resulting in a lively yet profound and rich character.

This single malt whisky is renowned for its elegant, fruity, and smooth taste. It boasts a sweet, vibrant aroma reminiscent of apples and pears, harmoniously blended with soft vanilla notes from the cask. The palate offers a dried fruit-like sweetness and a remarkably smooth texture. Its distinctive feature is a gentle, lingering finish where the sweetness of the malt and the essence of the cask subtly unfold.
