Founder John Walker opened a small grocery shop in Kilmarnock in 1820, which would change the world of whisky forever. John Walker & Sons Bicentenary Blend 28 Year Old is a limited edition whisky celebrating this bicentenary in 2020.

John Walker’s shop was packed with flavours and aromas from all over the world, including exotic ingredients from this rich era of exploration – Chinese Hyson tea, dark pepper from Jamaica, liquorice from Italy and of course Scotch whisky.

John started making whisky with the intention of collecting whisky from the people of Scotland to create a whisky that no one else could imitate. This was passed on to his son Alexander and later to his grandchildren.

John Walker & Sons Bicentenary Blend takes you on a sensory journey through the fragrant interior of John Walker’s grocery shop in 1820, when it all began.

Johnnie Walker’s sixth master blender, Jim Beveridge, and a small team of skilled whisky makers draw inspiration from the thrilling flavours found in the original stock of John Walker’s shop. As a window into the world John founded, they painstakingly crafted a richly layered, complex whisky that recreates the kaleidoscope of exotic flavours that shaped the founder’s imagination.

To create a whisky that recaptures the exotic flavours of the 1820s, the extremely rare whisky includes spirit from the ghost (closed) distilleries of Pittyvaich, Cambus and Port Ellen, all aged for a minimum of 28 years.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Complex and rich. Aromas of various fruits harmonise and are balanced by warm spices and soft smoky notes reminiscent of the exotic goods on display in John Walker’s shop. Dried fruits such as sultana (grape) raisins and figs are sweetened by candied ginger, while berries, brown sugar and aromatic spices fill the senses.

Palate: One bite through the door of John Walker’s reveals layers of delicious spices, mingling with sweet honey and thick molasses like the tempting jars that line the shop. Waves of sultana raisins, cocoa and herbs ride the soft smoke and make you walk further into John’s shop with every sip.

Finish: As the door closes, a lingering sweet spice finish follows.
