Ichiro’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve – Bottling Note

Ichiro’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve is produced by Venture Whisky at the Chichibu Distillery in Saitama. It forms part of the Leaf Series, a line‑up within the wider Ichiro’s Malt range.

The series includes:

Although the Leaf Series is made entirely from malt whisky, it does not rely on whisky from a single distillery. For that reason, it falls into the category of blended malt or vatted malt. In the case of the Mizunara Wood Reserve, overseas whisky is also included, meaning it is classified as a world blended whisky rather than a genuine Japanese whisky under current definitions.

Early releases are believed to have contained whisky from the former Hanyu Distillery, but today the whisky is thought to be composed of Chichibu malt combined with Scotch malt whisky. Importantly, these imported whiskies are not used as‑is; they are transferred into casks sourced by Chichibu and re‑matured on site before blending, giving the distillery full control over the final profile.

The defining feature of Ichiro’’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve is, as the name suggests, its use of Mizunara oak. After the component whiskies are vatted, the blend undergoes an additional period of maturation in Mizunara casks, imparting the distinctive aromatic character associated with this Japanese oak. Mizunara is known for its porous structure and unique fragrance, markedly different from American or European oak.

Venture Whisky has spent years refining its approach to Mizunara, sourcing wood from regions such as Hokkaido and continually experimenting to understand its nuances. The resulting whisky offers a layered, expressive character shaped by its diverse malt origins and the influence of Mizunara maturation. Lightly peated elements add depth, while the Japanese oak contributes its characteristic aromatic complexity.

Ichiro’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve – Tasting Note

Nose: The aroma opens with soft, expansive caramel, followed by baked apple, poached pear, vanilla, honey and a hint of brown‑sugar manju. A touch of milk chocolate appears in the background. The gentle oak influence is comforting, creating a rich, full aroma where fruity notes and cask character intertwine. There is very little noticeable smoke.

Palate: A suggestion of old, seasoned wood brings a subtle smokiness, layered with apple, thick honey and sweet vanilla. The sweetness is more pronounced on the palate than on the nose, spreading warmly before a measured bitterness guides the whisky into its finish. There is a faint, lingering bittersweet depth that settles on the tongue, giving the whisky more weight than its medium body might suggest. As it develops, the profile becomes slightly drier, with light peat and a firmer bitterness tightening the structure.

Finish: The finish balances cask‑driven notes, fruitiness and a touch of smoke. While it carries a Scotch‑like character, the influence of the oak adds the depth that defines the MWR style. Hints of salted vanilla and espresso provide a satisfying, flavourful aftertaste.

Overall: Ichiro’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve is a whisky that clearly showcases the character of Mizunara oak. The distinctive, almost antique wood‑like smokiness merges with caramel, honey and fruit sweetness to create a rich, layered profile. Compared with the Mizunara style associated with Yamazaki, this expression leans more classical, with a depth reminiscent of old‑style bottlings. Sweetness and bitterness spread in harmony across the palate, offering ample richness despite its medium body. Toward the finish, cask notes, gentle smoke and nuances of salted vanilla and espresso continue to unfold. A splash of water enhances the sweetness and umami, giving the whisky a creamier, softer texture. Served as a highball, brighter notes of green apple and citrus come to the fore, revealing yet another side of its character.
