Kanosuke Single Malt Kagoshima Exclusive: Bottling Note

The Kanosuke Single Malt Kagoshima Exclusive is the first product from Kanosuke limited to Kagoshima Prefecture. This whisky pays homage to the terroir of Hioki, Kagoshima—the birthplace of Kanosuke Distillery—and aims to contribute to regional development through its whisky production.

This expression utilizes “Hoshun”, a two-row barley cultivated in Kagoshima Prefecture. Hoshun is a relatively new variety, originally developed for beer brewing, yet it boasts excellent malt quality with a sweet and balanced profile. Through the unique “HIOKI Malting” method, which incorporates shochu koji-making equipment, Kagoshima-grown Hoshun barley is malted in-house. The resulting new make spirit is then matured in shochu re-charred casks, later vatted with spirits from various other casks, including bourbon barrels, and finally bottled non-chill filtered.

The label design for the Kanosuke Single Malt Kagoshima Exclusive draws inspiration from the sunset over the East China Sea and the horizon line, visible from “THE MELLOW BAR,” Kanosuke Distillery’s tasting room. It features a warm beige color, evoking the image of Hoshun barley. The presentation box is adorned with Sakurajima, a prominent symbol of Kagoshima.

This whisky is characterized by green apple aromas, the sweetness of tropical fruits, and the savory notes of malt. Enjoy the mellow and profound taste, nurtured by the abundant natural surroundings of Kagoshima, Kanosuke’s home.

Overall: This whisky carries a tropical aroma, with the sweetness of fruit and the savory notes of grain. Refreshing green apple aromas seamlessly blend with the sweetness of tropical fruits and the roasted character of malt. A subtle hint of ginger lingers in the finish. The brown sugar-like sweetness and tropical fruit flavors from the shochu re-charred casks harmonize with the vanilla and spice from the bourbon barrels, culminating in a rich and complex flavor profile.
