Kirin Single Grain Japanese Whiskey Fuji Bottling Note
Kirin Single Grain Japanese Whiskey Fuji is named a single grain because it’s a blend of grain whiskies exclusively from the Fuji-Gotemba Distillery, meaning it’s a single-distillery whiskey.
The whiskey is a blend of three unique grain whiskies, each with its own distinctive flavor profile:
- Bourbon-type Grain Whiskey: This heavy, richly flavored grain whiskey is made using the same type of “doubler” still used in the American bourbon industry. The Fuji-Gotemba Distillery uses its own unique expertise to create this full-bodied whiskey.
- Canadian-type Grain Whiskey: Unlike continuous distillation, this whiskey is made using a single pot still, similar to how malt whiskey is produced. While more labor-intensive, this method results in a smoother, yet deeply flavorful and fruity whiskey.
- Scotch-type Grain Whisky: Made using the same continuous distillation method as Scotch grain whisky, this light and clean-tasting spirit plays a crucial role. It doesn’t just make the blend easier to drink; it enhances the characteristics of the other whiskies and helps to unify the overall blend.
The result is a clean and fruity style, reflecting the pristine natural environment at the base of Mount Fuji. The full-bodied and fruity Canadian-type whiskey forms the core flavor, while the lush and thick Bourbon-type whiskey provides a supporting layer. The Scotch-type whisky then brings everything together, adding harmony and depth.
This single grain whiskey has a complex, sweet, and elegant multi-layered flavor profile. The intricate Mount Fuji design at the bottom of the bottle beautifully reflects the amber color of the whiskey. Kirin Single Grain Japanese Whiskey Fuji has also won a Gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) for five consecutive years.
Kirin Single Grain Japanese Whiskey Fuji Tasting Note
Nose: Elegant fruity aromas of raspberry and orange marmalade, with sweet, savory notes of pound cake and marron glacé.
Palate: The initial sip is soft, revealing multi-layered flavors of white grapes, orange peel, and bitter chocolate, along with spicy notes reminiscent of rye bread and cinnamon.
Finish: A gentle sweetness and a subtle scent of incense wood lead into a long, pleasant woody and spicy finish.
Overall: The flavor profile is somewhat similar to a bourbon, but it’s much more than that. While it shares the weighty, grain-derived notes of a bourbon, its character is more complex and multi-layered, with a mellow smoothness that’s a signature of this whiskey. It sits somewhere in the middle of a bourbon, Canadian, and Scotch-type grain whiskey—or perhaps, it’s the best of all three. This is truly the “Kirin Single Grain,” a unique and original creation that reflects Kirin’s strong ties to Seagram’s and their expert distillation of different grain spirits.
