Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year Old Bottling Note
Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year Old is a blended malt Scotch whisky produced by Diageo under the iconic Johnnie Walker brand, distinguished by its exclusive use of single malts and its 15-year age statement.
Unlike other expressions in the Johnnie Walker lineup, Green Label is not a traditional blended Scotch that includes grain whisky. Instead, it is crafted entirely from single malt whiskies sourced from four renowned distilleries across Scotland: Talisker from the Isle of Skye, Caol Ila from Islay, Cragganmore from Speyside, and Linkwood, also from Speyside. Each of these malts contributes distinct regional characteristics, resulting in a whisky that is both balanced and complex.
The Green Label was first introduced in 1997 as “Johnnie Walker Pure Malt” for duty-free markets and rebranded globally in 2004 as “Green Label.” It was briefly discontinued in 2012 but returned to the core range in 2016 due to popular demand. All component whiskies are aged for a minimum of 15 years, ensuring maturity and integration of flavors. The blend is bottled at 43% ABV, slightly higher than standard expressions, which helps preserve its layered profile.
The use of multiple cask types, including ex-bourbon and refill American oak, contributes to its depth and texture. The marrying process allows the individual malts to harmonize while retaining their unique traits, offering a whisky that bridges the gap between single malt purity and blended complexity.
Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year Old Tasting Note
Nose: An immediate coastal and earthy presence, defined by fresh cut grass, wet moss, and sea salt spray. This is balanced by notes of dried oak, malty cereals, and a subtle underlying pipe tobacco smoke.
Palate: A complex fusion of Speyside malt fruitiness and Islay smoke. Rich flavors of wood smoke, sandalwood, and sweet vanilla custard develop across the tongue. A core of crisp apple and poached pear offers balance to the strong peat and dark honey elements.
Finish: Medium to long, clean, and smoky. The lingering wood spice and peat smoke fade gracefully, leaving behind a touch of citrus zest and pepper.
Overall: Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year Old is an excellent, well-structured 15-year-old blended malt. The defined Speyside and Islay components are seamlessly integrated, making it flavorful, robust, and exceptionally versatile.
