Springbank 10 Year Old 2015 Fino Cask Matured Bottling Note
The Springbank 10 Year Old 2015 Fino Cask Matured is a notable addition to the celebrated Sherry Wood Series from the Springbank Distillery. Located in Campbeltown, this family owned distillery remains one of the few in Scotland to handle the entire production process on site, from traditional floor malting to final bottling. This specific expression marks the fourth entry in a planned five part series, each designed to explore the interaction between the oily, coastal Campbeltown spirit and various styles of sherry wood.
Production and Maturation
Distilled in July 2015, this single malt underwent a dual maturation process spanning a full decade. The spirit initially spent four years in refill bourbon hogsheads, which provided a foundational layer of vanilla and subtle sweetness. Following this, the whisky was transferred into fresh Fino sherry hogsheads made from American oak for an additional six years.
Fino sherry is known for its dry, saline, and nutty profile, often developed under a layer of yeast known as flor. By choosing Fino casks for a lengthy six year secondary maturation, the distillery allowed these specific wine characteristics to integrate deeply with the malt. The whisky was bottled in October 2025 at a robust cask strength of 55 percent ABV. As with all releases from this distillery, the liquid is natural in colour and has not undergone chill filtration.
Characteristics
The Springbank 10 Year Old 2015 Fino Cask Matured is defined by a balance of maritime influence and crisp dryness. The use of Fino sherry casks introduces a mineral quality and a distinct nuttiness that complements the heavy, oily texture of the distillery distillate. While it maintains the classic Campbeltown saltiness and a delicate touch of peat smoke, the American oak Fino hogsheads contribute a bright, zesty structure and a dry finish that differs significantly from more common Oloroso or Pedro Ximenez maturations.
Springbank 10 Year Old 2015 Fino Cask Matured Tasting Note
Nose: The aroma opens with a distinct maritime salinity and damp wool, typical of the Campbeltown style. This is followed by crisp green apples, dried grass, and a faint mineral note reminiscent of wet pebbles. A subtle thread of earthy peat smoke remains in the background, accompanied by a touch of toasted almonds and lemon zest.
Palate: On the palate, the texture is oily and coating. Initial flavours of sourdough bread and salted butter lead into more tart citrus notes and green olives. The influence of the Fino sherry is evident through a dry nuttiness and a hint of white pepper. There is a consistent savoury quality throughout, with very little residual sweetness.
Finish: The finish is long and remarkably dry. It leaves a lingering sensation of sea salt, toasted oak, and a light herbal bitterness.
Overall: This expression displays a firm, structured profile where the dry wine influence balances the heavy distillery character. It is a coastal and savoury dram with a refined, mineral edge.
