Description
Akkeshi Blended Whisky Shosetsu Bottling Note
Akkeshi Blended Whisky Shosetsu, the 13th release in Akkeshi’s 24 Solar Terms Series, captures the essence of “Shosetsu” (little snow), a period of the solar calendar marked by the subtle transition from autumn to winter. This is a time when the first snow graces the mountain peaks, and the crisp air heralds the coming cold.
This whisky is a blend of malt whiskies made from Hokkaido-grown barley and grain whiskies, aged for 3 to 5 years in ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and Hokkaido Mizunara oak casks. As it blends Akkeshi-produced malt whisky with imported grain whisky matured in Akkeshi, it is categorized as a world blended whisky.
Akkeshi Blended Whisky Shosetsu offers a well-balanced impression, with no single element of peat, malt, grain, or cask overly dominant. The growth and maturation of each component whisky are clearly evident. The aroma is more peaty than previous Akkeshi winter releases, and the spicy sweetness characteristic of Mizunara oak is particularly impressive, along with Akkeshi’s signature citrus notes.
When enjoyed neat, the body feels a bit light, perhaps due to the quality of the Akkeshi-matured grain used. This type of whisky might be perceived as lacking interest due to its less impactful flavor. However, there is no single “perfect” whisky, and a subtly understated flavor that can be enjoyed daily is also a form of perfection.

Akkeshi Blended Whisky Shosetsu Tasting Note
Nose: Sweet soy sauce, tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet), honey, lemon, cheesecake, a hint of raisin. A characteristic spicy sweetness of Mizunara oak is present, and with time, fruity notes emerge.
Palate: Smoke, citrus acidity and sweetness, sweetness of grain, a sense of dashi (Japanese soup stock), which becomes more floral over time.
Finish: Pink peppercorn, orange sauce, salted lemon, lemon peel.
Overall: The overall impression is strongly Japanese, with a prominent dashi-like flavor and a pleasant sweetness from the grain whisky. It has the deep sweetness characteristic of Akkeshi blends. The flavors and aromas evolve over time, making this a whisky to be savored slowly.
