Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky Bottling Note
Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky is crafted using Nikka’s traditional continuous “Coffey still,” a rare type of distillation equipment. While Coffey stills are typically used to produce grain whisky—like Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, which is made primarily from corn—Nikka has taken a bold approach by distilling malted barley in the same still, creating a distinctive and innovative whisky.
The Coffey still preserves the rich aroma and natural sweetness of the malt, along with subtle vanilla notes from the aging barrels. This whisky showcases the unique character that only the Coffey method can bring: a harmonious blend of malt sweetness, roasted depth, coffee-like bitterness, and light vanilla tones. The texture is smooth and airy, with a creamy sweetness that gently unfolds, followed by a clean, refreshing finish.
Interestingly, although Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is made from malted barley, it’s classified as a grain whisky because it’s not distilled in a pot still—a technical nuance that sets it apart.
Additionally, because this whisky includes spirit distilled at Ben Nevis Distillery in Scotland (a Nikka-owned facility), it doesn’t meet the criteria set by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association to be labeled as “Japanese whisky.”
Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky Tasting Note
Nose: Sweet and toasty notes of vanilla and grain, lifted by a lively citrus zest. A hint of Williams pear softens the bright lemon tones, creating a delicate balance. Subtle pepper and balsamic aromas weave in, gradually evolving into a milky café au lait character.
Palate: Echoing the nose, vibrant citrus (like clementine and orange) energizes the profile. Bitter chocolate, coffee, and praline add depth, while notes of baba au rhum and vanilla cream bring a richer dimension. Unexpected hints of banana, prune, mirabelle, and green ginger lend a fruit-forward, eau-de-vie-like impression.
Finish: Just before the fruit takes center stage, a whisper of licorice peeks through, followed by lingering notes of prune and mirabelle.
Overall: Exceptionally toasty and aromatic, with a layered complexity. The bitterness stands out but is beautifully balanced by citrus, vanilla, caramel, and chocolate, resulting in a richly nuanced flavor.
