Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old Bottling Note
Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon distilled and matured at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, USA, and is one of the age-stated expressions representing the Ancient Age brand under the ownership of Sazerac Company
. Before 1999, the present-day Buffalo Trace Distillery operated under the name “Ancient Age Distilling Company”, and the historical connection between the distillery and the brand remains particularly strong. While the current Ancient Age range also includes American-market releases such as Ancient Age and Ancient Age 10 Star, Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old is widely recognised as a Japan-market expression that retains an 8-year age statement, giving it a distinctive position within the brand’s portfolio.
This expression carries an 8-year age statement and is bottled at 43% ABV as a Kentucky Straight Bourbon. “Ancient Ancient Age”, with the repeated use of “Ancient”, is the product’s official name and clearly distinguishes it from the standard Ancient Age bottlings. The clearly stated maturation period is particularly notable within the current Ancient Age line-up, and compared to NAS expressions or Ancient Age 10 Star, it presents a style with a more settled and mature profile.
Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old is widely understood to use Buffalo Trace Distillery’s so-called “Mash Bill #2” recipe. This mash bill is characterised by a corn-led composition with a comparatively higher rye content, generally believed to contain around 12–15% rye. Other bourbons associated with the same mash bill include Blanton’s and Elmer T. Lee, and within the Buffalo Trace range it is known for producing a slightly spicier and more traditionally styled bourbon character.
In terms of production, the whisky reflects Buffalo Trace Distillery’s long-established use of continuous distillation and traditional rickhouse maturation methods. The distillery itself is regarded as one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States and was among the few permitted to produce medicinal whiskey during Prohibition. Today, it remains one of the defining names in the American whiskey industry.
Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old occupies a somewhat different position from modern flagship releases such as Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare. Rather than emphasising limited-edition status or single barrel presentation, it maintains a style rooted in traditional Kentucky bourbon. Although produced through batching rather than single barrel selection, the slightly higher 43% ABV gives it more structure than a purely light-bodied bourbon, balancing classic notes of sweetness, grain character, gentle spice, and oak in a relatively restrained and approachable manner.
Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old Tasting Note
Nose: Sweet aromas reminiscent of vanilla and caramel emerge gently from the glass. These are followed by soft grain notes derived from the corn-heavy mash bill, alongside light spice associated with the higher rye content of Mash Bill #2, gradually developing into hints of cinnamon and dry oak. Rather than displaying the aggressive oak influence often found in modern high-proof bourbons, the overall impression remains composed and classically styled.
Palate: The texture is relatively smooth, with the 43% ABV providing a moderate sense of body and structure. While sweetness forms the foundation of the palate, the whisky avoids becoming overly simple, as grain richness and gentle spice gradually expand through the mid-palate. The rounded texture typical of Buffalo Trace bourbons is present, while a subtle dry accent, likely influenced by the rye content, keeps the profile balanced and firmly rooted in a classic Kentucky bourbon style.
Finish: The finish is medium in length, with sweetness and oak fading gradually. Light woody notes and gentle spice remain into the later stages, and although it is not an intensely long or forceful finish, it carries the calm maturity expected from an 8-year-old bourbon. The emphasis is placed more on balance and restraint than intensity.
Overall: Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old stands apart from many modern bourbons that focus on exclusivity or increasingly high proof levels, instead preserving a comparatively straightforward traditional style. Although it belongs to Buffalo Trace Distillery’s Mash Bill #2 family, it places less emphasis on the flamboyance associated with releases such as Blanton’s, favouring instead a more everyday and classically structured bourbon profile. Its long-standing presence within the Japanese market also gives it a character and positioning somewhat distinct from more contemporary premium-oriented bourbon releases.
