Ancient Age

Ancient Age is an American bourbon whiskey brand produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, and owned by Sazerac Company. The brand has a particularly close historical connection to the distillery itself, as Buffalo Trace operated under the name “Ancient Age Distilling Company” prior to 1999. Positioned within the wider Buffalo Trace portfolio, Ancient Age is known for offering a more traditional and accessible interpretation of Kentucky Straight Bourbon compared to some of the distillery’s higher-profile premium releases.

The range is widely associated with Buffalo Trace’s “Mash Bill #2” recipe, a rye-forward bourbon mash bill also linked to brands such as Blanton’s and Elmer T. Lee. This style generally delivers a balance of sweetness, grain character, gentle spice, and oak influence while retaining a classic Kentucky bourbon profile. Expressions within the Ancient Age range have included NAS bottlings such as Ancient Age and Ancient Age 10 Star, alongside age-stated releases including the Japan-market Ancient Ancient Age 8 Year Old. Although often positioned below Buffalo Trace’s flagship or collectible labels, the brand has maintained a long-standing reputation for presenting a straightforward and traditionally styled bourbon character.
