Sabromaru Gyokuto is a blended whisky series produced by Sabromaru Distillery, where Sabromaru malt whisky is the key component. Each annual release features a unique blend with a distinct theme.

Gyokuto has been released in three editions: 2021, 2022, and 2023. The blend composition for each is as follows:

• 2021 Edition: A blend of Sabromaru malt whisky as the base, with a wide range of ages averaging over 10 years. It also includes Scotch grain whisky matured in roasted casks and sherry malt.
• 2022 Edition: A blend of Sabromaru malt whisky as the base, with whiskies matured in various types of casks, including roasted, wine, and sherry casks.
• 2023 Edition: A blend with Sabromaru malt whisky distilled in 2020 and matured in bourbon casks, and malt whisky distilled in 2017 and matured in sherry casks as the key components. It also includes whiskies matured in rich-colored French oak casks and domestic winery red wine casks.

Sabromaru Gyokuto 2023 Edition is blended using Sabromaru malt whisky and imported whiskies such as Scotch grain whisky. Therefore, it cannot be strictly classified as a pure Japanese whisky but is categorized as a world blended whisky produced in Japan.

This blend offers a more floral, fresh, and sweet flavor profile compared to the typical Sabromaru style. The prominent sherry cask component in the 2023 edition gives it a strong sherry character, and the combination of bourbon and sherry casks contributes to its sweet, dessert-like taste.

While Sabromaru Gyokuto is a delicious and complex whisky, its price point for a blended whisky, often higher than single malt Scotch, might make it a difficult purchase for some. Despite this, the charming rabbit label adds a unique touch.

Meaning of “Gyokuto”: Gyokuto refers to the moon. It is an alternative name for the moon derived from an ancient proverb that says there is a rabbit on the moon.

Nose: A combination of sherry, chocolate, honey, and slightly acidic red wine notes with hints of berries creates a floral and sweet aroma. There’s a subtle smokiness as well.
