A key feature of the Yamazaki Distillery is its extensive selection of single malt whiskies. This deliberate crafting of diverse new make spirits happens at every major step of production; even the use of various barley types during mashing plays a role in this rich variety.
The fifth installment of THE ESSENCE of SUNTORY WHISKY features the release of two whiskies: Yamazaki Golden Promise and Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt, presenting a contrast between non-peated and peated malts.
The fifth release in The Essence of Suntory Whisky series, the Yamazaki 12 Year Old Golden Promise, was launched on August 31, 2021. This single malt whisky is crafted exclusively from unblended malt whiskies made using Golden Promise barley.
Golden Promise was a widely cultivated barley variety in Scotland from around 1968 to 1980, but it is now a rare strain produced only in limited quantities. While challenging to grow, it’s considered a top-tier variety for malt whisky, known for its deep richness and sweetness. Notably, the Macallan distillery famously used only this “Golden Promise” barley for a period.
This product, centered around this special barley, marks Suntory’s first endeavor of its kind. We invite you to savor the characteristic robustness of Yamazaki alongside the soft cereal notes and rich, full-bodied texture derived from the Golden Promise variety.
The product label design is inspired by the Japanese character for “wheat” (麦).
