Description

Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve

Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve (No Age Statement) is a Japanese single malt whisky produced by Suntory at the Hakushu Distillery in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture. Situated at an elevation of around 700 metres at the foot of the Southern Alps, the distillery began operations in 1973 and benefits from a cool climate and abundant natural water sources, creating a distinctive environment for malt whisky production within Japan. This expression is released as a No Age Statement (NAS) single malt, with the current core bottling introduced in 2012. By combining multiple malt whiskies of varying ages, it is designed to maintain a consistent house style rather than emphasising a specific maturation period. The alcohol content is set at 43% ABV.

In production, the distillery employs a variety of pot still shapes and sizes to create different styles of spirit. Variations in fermentation and distillation contribute to a diverse range of malt components, which are then combined to achieve overall balance. The maturation includes whiskies aged in American oak casks, among others, blending younger and more matured elements. Its characteristic light smokiness derives from the use of peated malt, forming a style that harmonises with fresh, forest-like notes.

Within the same brand, age-stated expressions such as Hakushu 12 Year Old present a richer and more concentrated profile, whereas Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve emphasises freshness and vibrancy. Compared to Yamazaki, another Suntory whisky produced at the Yamazaki Distillery, differences in location and climate are reflected in the whisky’s character, with Hakushu often positioned as lighter and more refreshing. Its overall profile can be summarised by the keywords “forest, light, refreshing.”

In Japan, it is widely available, particularly in bars and restaurants, and is often associated with being enjoyed with soda. At the Hakushu Distillery, a highball garnished with mint leaves is also known, enhancing its refreshing qualities. The whisky carries a strong association with its forest surroundings, making it well-suited to casual, everyday occasions. The approach of producing diverse malt components within a single distillery and blending them to maintain a consistent style forms the foundation of Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve as a core expression within the Hakushu range.

Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve Tasting Note

Nose: A refreshing aroma reminiscent of sudachi citrus and mint, layered with gentle malt sweetness. Overall, a fresh, forest-like impression.

Palate: Light and smooth on the palate. A clean impression with a subtle acidity is followed by soft sweetness and a sense of fresh greenery. Juicy, crisp notes reminiscent of green apple are complemented by a gentle smokiness, adding natural depth.

Finish: A faint smokiness and restrained sweetness linger, finishing clean and crisp.

Overall: A consistently fresh, forest-inspired profile. Despite being a NAS expression, the alcohol presence is soft, with notable lightness and balance. The combination of moderate smokiness and freshness ensures its character remains distinct even when diluted.
