Kirin Single Malt Japanese Whisky Fuji Bottling Note
Kirin Single Malt Japanese Whisky Fuji is a single malt whisky blended exclusively from malt whiskies distilled at the Fuji Gotemba Distillery. Crafted to evoke the beauty of Mount Fuji with every sip, its rich, fruity flavor is a hallmark of the diverse malts used in its creation.
This whisky is made with two distinct types of malt: one is a light and vibrant malt, a continuation of the distillery’s traditional “clean and estery” style, a core principle since its founding. The other is a fruity and creamy malt, produced using an evolved mashing and fermentation process.
The whisky is primarily aged in American white oak bourbon barrels, a key choice for the Fuji Gotemba Distillery. To create a richer flavor profile, it’s also matured in beer and French oak wine casks. This combination adds depth and complexity: the sweet and floral notes from the bourbon barrels are complemented by a floral character from the beer casks and a fruity depth from the wine casks.
Kirin Single Malt Japanese Whisky Fuji has received the gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) for several consecutive years.
Kirin Single Malt Japanese Whisky Fuji Tasting Note
Nose: The aroma is slightly dry with a bright, estery top note. You’ll find vibrant, fruity scents of ripe apple, pineapple, and citrus peel, along with the sweet aromas of crème brûlée and honey, and a floral hint of Darjeeling tea.
Palate: It has a soft, velvety texture on the palate. The rich, fruity flavor spreads across your mouth, with notes of ripe white peach, pear, and apricot, and a full-bodied richness reminiscent of a fruit tart.
Finish: The finish is elegant and oaky, with an aroma that lingers in the nasal cavity. It’s woody and dry, with a sweetness and slight astringency like boiled chestnuts in their inner skin. There’s also a hint of bitterness and a spicy kick.
Overall: This whisky is a true embodiment of the “clean and estery” house style, characterized by a light yet rich fruitiness. It has flavors reminiscent of the now-discontinued Single Malt Fujisanroku 18 Year Old. As you gradually add water, the aromas evolve: from the complex sweetness of crème brûlée to a ripe fruit tart, then to a fresher fruit cake, and finally to a floral fruit-flavored tea. It’s a multilayered, elegant aroma that evokes the fruits and flowers nurtured at the foot of Mount Fuji—a truly “beautiful” whisky.
