Mars Tsunuki 2026 Edition Bottling Note
Mars Tsunuki Distillery, operated by Hombo Shuzo, lies in the mountainous Kuratayama range in Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima Prefecture, on the south‑western edge of the Satsuma Peninsula. The basin’s pronounced temperature contrasts and the pure spring water drawn from the Kuratayama system create conditions long regarded as ideal for whisky production and maturation.
The Single Malt Tsunuki 2026 Edition is the distillery’s annual release for 2026. Excluding single casks and special editions such as the Art Collection, this bottling represents the seventh official yearly expression and forms part of the standard range that showcases Tsunuki’s house style. Bottled at 49% ABV, it is composed primarily of whisky matured in bourbon barrels and sherry casks, vatted from multiple cask types to achieve a balanced profile.
Although the production philosophy printed on the back label remains consistent with the 2024 and 2025 editions, each year displays its own character. The 2026 Edition places greater emphasis on bourbon‑cask‑matured whisky, resulting in bright fruit aromas reminiscent of orange, lemon, and yellow peach. Compared with the richer, sherry‑forward impressions of recent years, this release feels fresher, more lifted, and more vibrant. At the same time, Tsunuki’s signature spice and a gentle thread of smoke remain present, allowing fruit, spice, and smoke to coexist in a well‑balanced harmony.
Despite being an annual release, the series is not positioned as a rarity‑driven limited edition. Instead, it is valued as a consistent, evolving reflection of the distillery’s current style. One of its key attractions is the ability to appreciate subtle year‑on‑year differences within the same overarching identity.
The 2026 label features a motif of the old still tower—an emblem of the Tsunuki Distillery—giving this edition a distinct visual character. With its combination of Tsunuki’s inherent robustness, bright fruitiness, and gentle smoke, this bottling offers a clear and honest expression of the distillery’s personality.
Mars Tsunuki 2026 Edition Tasting Note
Nose: A fruity bouquet of orange, ripe apple, and apricot. Honeyed sweetness merges with soft vanilla and malt notes, while subtle spices—evoking cinnamon bark and ginger—provide structure. A faint hint of toasted oak lingers in the background.
Palate: Smooth and rounded. Caramel and honey lead, followed by citrus notes reminiscent of honey‑soaked lemon peel and orange marmalade. Malt richness, cask‑driven vanilla, and assertive oak are joined by crisp spices, a touch of mint, and a gentle pith‑like bitterness, creating a layered and textured palate.
Finish: A calm, smoky undertone carries through the finish, with lingering malt character and a delicate oak astringency. Citrus freshness and warm spice remain in pleasing balance.
Overall: A brighter, more bourbon‑forward expression than the 2025 Edition, with citrus and vanilla taking centre stage. Fresh, lively, and well‑structured, it captures Tsunuki’s evolving style while retaining the distillery’s familiar spice and gentle smoke. A confident, expressive release that feels both approachable and distinctly Tsunuki.
