AMAHAGAN Madoromi Barmaid (Sleepy Barmaid) Kiho Ibuki Bottling Note
AMAHAGAN World Blended Madoromi Barmaid (Sleepy Barmaid) Bottle Kiho Ibuki is a world malt whisky based on whisky aged in sherry casks produced and sold by Nagahama Distillery in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It is released on July 12, 2022 and is the 2nd product in collaboration with the popular manga “Madoromi Barmaid” (Sleepy Barmaid).
This second release, “Kiho Ibuki,” is a bartender at the renowned five-star hotel, “Hotel Elysion Tokyo. “Kiho Ibuki’s caring and big-sister-like personality, along with her gentle yet occasionally passionate demeanor, is represented through a blended malt whisky based on sherry cask whisky. The whisky from Nagahama Distillery is blended with some whiskies from overseas distilleries. Additionally, her poised behavior at the bar counter is accentuated with approximately 50ppm of smoky malt. The maltiness carries a citrus aroma reminiscent of oranges, while the sherry cask imparts notes of red berries and rum raisins. The subtle tannins provide a balanced finish to the flavor.
The blend and flavor of the “Kiho Ibuki” bottle, the second release, are contrasted with the third release, the “Hiyoko Hinosaki” bottle. While the “Hiyoko Hinosaki” bottle is a free-spirited blended spirit, the “Kiho Ibuki” bottle is a traditional blended whisky. The deliberate use of classic Scotch-style casks and whisky composition reflects her atmosphere and character. For authentic whisky enthusiasts, this structure offers a comforting and soothing taste experience.
AMAHAGAN Madoromi Barmaid (Sleepy Barmaid) Kiho Ibuki Tasting Note
Nose: An exotic and rich scent with hints of cinnamon and dry malt. After some exposure to air, a mature fruitiness emerges. The aroma balances the sweetness and acidity of oranges, the bitterness reminiscent of chocolate, and a fresh feel with a creamy sweetness suggesting persimmons and chestnuts. It achieves a fruitiness similar to that of a Southern Highland malt, while maintaining a Japanese touch.
Palate: At 47%, it has an oily and robust mouthfeel, providing a satisfying drinking experience. The rich yet refreshing sweetness and acidity, reminiscent of oranges, along with a creamy sweetness like chestnuts, gently spread in the mouth. The finish is highlighted by a lively sweet and sour taste, reminiscent of raspberries and strawberries, possibly from sherry cask origins.
Finish: A clear and malty roasted flavor and sweetness linger, with a slight bitter peat accent and an emphasized malty character.
Overall: Balanced sweetness and acidity. A punchy, malty, and salty flavor that stands out. Even compared to the vatted malts by authentic Scotch bottlers, it doesn’t fall short in satisfaction. It significantly transforms with the addition of water, becoming exceptionally delicious.
