Nikka Black Special Bottling Note
Nikka Black Special is a blended whisky produced by Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd. The current expression was introduced in 1985, with its roots tracing back to the Black Nikka brand, first launched in 1956. The moustachioed figure on the label is known as the “King of Blenders”. Created to symbolise Masataka Taketsuru’s belief in the importance of blending, the character first appeared on a bottle in 1959, according to Nikka’s official website.
The current expression is a non-age-statement (NAS) blended whisky made using malt whisky, grain whisky and neutral spirit. It is bottled at 42% ABV in a 700 ml bottle. Alongside other expressions such as Black Nikka Clear, Rich Blend and Deep Blend, Black Nikka Special remains one of the range’s established bottlings, reflecting the brand’s long-standing blending tradition.
One of the elements contributing to its character is Nikka’s distinctive Coffey grain whisky, produced using a Coffey still, a type of continuous distillation apparatus. The gentle sweetness and smooth texture of this grain whisky complement the depth and aroma of the malt whisky, creating a balanced blend. Nikka highlights the harmony between robust malt aromas and the lighter character of Coffey grain whisky, together with malt-derived richness, oak bitterness, gentle peat and a lingering woody finish.
Position Within the Black Nikka Range
Black Nikka Clear prioritises a clean, light and approachable style, whereas Black Nikka Special offers a more pronounced malt character and oak-derived bitterness, giving it a more traditional blended whisky profile. Rich Blend is characterised by fruity sweetness from sherry-cask-matured malt whisky, while Deep Blend emphasises woody notes and vanilla-like sweetness associated with new oak casks. In contrast, Black Nikka Special focuses on the interplay of malty richness, the soft sweetness of Coffey grain whisky, gentle peat and lingering oak notes.
Its substantial black bottle design also reflects the traditional image of the Black Nikka brand. Although it is not the lightest or most delicate expression in the range, the whisky retains a distinct malt character without becoming overly heavy, thanks to the sweetness and softness of the grain component. Subtle peat and oak bitterness provide further balance, making it a good example of Nikka’s traditional approach to blending.
Nikka Black Special Tasting Note
Nose: Toasted grain and malt aromas lead, accompanied by sweet notes of vanilla and honey. Hints of apple-like fruitiness and liquorice add further detail, although the overall impression is restrained and conventional rather than particularly distinctive.
Palate: Malty richness and grain-derived sweetness form the foundation, followed by flavours of vanilla and apple, with bittersweet chocolate and a touch of oak. A moderate smoky note adds character. The whisky has a substantial flavour profile while remaining approachable, with relatively gentle alcohol warmth and a pleasing balance between sweetness and bitterness.
Finish: A hint of honeyed sweetness gives way to oak-derived bitterness and gentle smokiness. The finish is moderate rather than particularly long or intense, leaving a composed and understated impression.
Overall: A traditional blended whisky that brings together toasted grain, malty richness, gentle sweetness and subtle smoky, woody bitterness. While its aroma is relatively understated, the palate offers a satisfying depth of flavour without sacrificing drinkability. Rather than relying on bold or highly distinctive characteristics, Black Nikka Special showcases the balance between malt and grain whisky that lies at the heart of Nikka’s blending tradition.
