Description
Nikka Tsuru Bottling Note
Nikka Tsuru is a distinguished whisky with a rich history and exceptional craftsmanship. Introduced in 1976, Tsuru is Nikka’s highest-grade blended whisky, a testament to the legacy of Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky. This whisky represents the culmination of Taketsuru’s 60 years of dedication to whisky-making, making it his final masterpiece.
Back in 1976, Initially, Tsuru was presented in a beautifully crafted ceramic bottle adorned with bamboo and crane motifs, symbolizing elegance and tradition. Nikka Tsuru was born from this passion, blending 15 to 20-year-old malts from Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries with carefully selected grain whisky. This blend was designed to achieve a perfect balance of flavors, showcasing the depth and complexity of aged malts. In 2006, Tsuru 17 Year Old was released, but it was discontinued in 2015. Since then, only Tsuru NV (this product, may called “Nikka Tsuru Gold Label”) has been available for sale.
The manufacturing process of Nikka Tsuru involves meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. The whisky is produced using traditional methods at the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. Yoichi, located in Hokkaido, is known for its robust and peaty single malts, while Miyagikyo in Miyagi Prefecture produces softer and fruitier malts. The blending process combines these distinct characteristics, resulting in a harmonious and well-rounded whisky. The use of coal-fired pot stills at Yoichi and the unique Coffey stills at Miyagikyo contribute to the distinctive flavor profile of Tsuru.
Nikka Tsuru is characterized by its refined and complex flavor profile. It offers a delicate balance of fruity and floral notes, with hints of apple, pear, and citrus, complemented by subtle smokiness and a touch of spice. The whisky’s smooth and velvety texture is enhanced by the long maturation process, which imparts rich and layered flavors. The finish is elegant and lingering, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.
Comparing Nikka Tsuru to similar whiskies, it stands out for its exceptional quality and craftsmanship. While other Japanese whiskies like Yamazaki 12 Year Old and Hibiki 17 Year Old are renowned for their complexity and smoothness, Tsuru offers a unique blend of aged malts and grain whisky that sets it apart. The use of both Yoichi and Miyagikyo malts provides a distinctive flavor profile that is both robust and delicate. Additionally, Tsuru’s limited availability, being sold exclusively at the distilleries, adds to its allure and exclusivity.
In summary, Nikka Tsuru is a remarkable whisky that embodies the legacy of Masataka Taketsuru and the artistry of Japanese whisky-making and offers a unique and memorable whisky experience.
