Yamazaki Story of the Distillery 2026 Edition Bottling Note
The Yamazaki Story of the Distillery 2026 Edition is a limited‑release single malt Japanese whisky launched on 26 May 2026 as the third instalment in Suntory’s Story of the Distillery series for Yamazaki. This edition is bottled at 43% ABV and presented as a non‑age‑statement (NAS) expression.
The theme for the 2026 Edition is “Why the land of Yamazaki is the ideal birthplace for whisky making.” Both the label and presentation box are crafted from Echizen washi paper and feature an illustration of Minase Falls, a renowned local water source near the Yamazaki Distillery. The series highlights not only the whisky itself but also the natural environment and unique character of the region that has shaped the distillery, serving as a narrative bridge to the heritage behind the Yamazaki brand.
The whisky is composed of a diverse selection of malt whiskies, including Mizunara cask whisky, Spanish oak cask whisky, and American white oak cask whisky. By combining multiple cask types, the blend achieves a depth and complexity unattainable through a single‑cask style alone. Yamazaki is known for operating a wide variety of pot stills with differing shapes and heating methods, enabling the distillery to produce an extensive range of whisky styles. This diversity of component whiskies forms the foundation of Yamazaki’s blending expertise and is one of the brand’s greatest strengths.
Although the Story of the Distillery series has been released annually since 2024, Suntory’s official tasting notes remain unchanged across the editions, suggesting a consistent flavour concept throughout the series. Nevertheless, subtle differences may be perceived from year to year due to the blender’s adjustments and natural variations in maturation conditions. Unlike age‑statement bottlings such as Yamazaki 12‑year‑old or 18‑year‑old, this series is positioned as a limited release that expresses the distillery’s environment and the diversity of its whisky styles rather than a specific maturation period.
Overall, the whisky presents a profile centred on classic Yamazaki characteristics: dried fruits, oak, gentle sweetness with a distinctly Japanese nuance, and a soft, understated smokiness. The result is a style that balances delicacy with underlying strength.

Overall: The sweetness takes center stage, with orange marmalade defining the structure. The smokiness and spiciness emerge gently over time, becoming more pronounced with added water.
