Akkeshi Single Malt Whisky Shokan: Bottling Note
Akkeshi Single Malt Japanese Whisky Shokan is a limited-edition Japanese single malt whisky produced at Akkeshi Distillery in Akkeshi, Hokkaido, and released under the Akkeshi brand by Kenten Jitsugyo Co., Ltd. It is the 21st release in the distillery’s celebrated Twenty-Four Solar Terms Series, a collection inspired by Nijushi Sekki, the traditional East Asian calendar that divides the year into twenty-four seasonal periods. “Shokan” translates as “Lesser Cold”, referring to the time in early January when winter conditions begin to intensify, a fitting theme for a whisky shaped by the rugged climate of eastern Hokkaido.
Bottled at 55% ABV, Shokan is a non-age-statement (NAS) single malt Japanese whisky matured in a combination of bourbon, sherry, red wine, and locally sourced Hokkaido Mizunara oak casks. By marrying spirit from several cask types, Akkeshi has created a whisky that showcases a broader and more nuanced side of the distillery character while retaining a clear sense of place and identity.
Previous Akkeshi single malts have often been associated with rich peat influence and coastal smokiness, earning comparisons with heavily peated island whiskies. Shokan, however, takes a somewhat different approach. Rather than placing smoke at the forefront, it gives greater prominence to malt character, fruit-driven complexity, and balance. The result is a more restrained interpretation of the Akkeshi style, demonstrating the distillery’s growing versatility as the Twenty-Four Solar Terms Series approaches its conclusion. Released during the distillery’s tenth winter since commencing operations, Shokan stands as an intriguing snapshot of both continuity and evolution within the Akkeshi range.

Akkeshi Single Malt Whisky Shokan Tasting Note
Nose: Soft orchard fruit leads the way, suggesting poached pear, ripe persimmon and a touch of baked apple. Notes of marmalade on toasted bread and vanilla wafer biscuits bring a gentle sweetness, while dried apricot, malt biscuits and light cereal tones add depth. Beneath the fruit and malt lies a delicate coastal peat influence, accompanied by hints of citrus oils and a subtle medicinal edge. Compared with earlier Akkeshi releases, the profile feels lighter, cleaner and more composed.
Palate: Smooth and creamy on arrival, opening with bright impressions of satsuma jelly and preserved lemon. Layers of brown sugar confectionery, sweet bean jelly and dried persimmon develop across the palate, providing richness without excessive weight. Despite its 55% strength, the alcohol is well integrated, supporting rather than dominating the flavour profile. Oak influence remains measured, allowing youthful malt notes and spirit character to remain clearly visible. The balance between sweetness, freshness and gentle smoke is a defining feature.
Finish: Medium to long in length, the finish gradually introduces cracked pepper, ginger syrup and a touch of citrus zest. Gentle cocoa and dark chocolate notes emerge before fading into a lingering veil of soft peat smoke. Rather than building to an overtly smoky conclusion, the whisky recedes slowly and quietly, leaving behind a subtle reminder of its coastal origins.
Overall: Akkeshi Single Malt Whisky Shokan presents a more understated expression of the distillery’s character than many of its predecessors. While longtime followers may associate Akkeshi with assertive peat and maritime weight, Shokan places equal emphasis on fruit, malt complexity and balance. The influence of sherry, red wine and Mizunara oak casks is evident in the whisky’s structure, yet none overwhelms the spirit itself. As one of the later entries in the Twenty-Four Solar Terms Series, it reflects a distillery confident enough to explore different stylistic directions while remaining recognisably Akkeshi. The result is a thoughtful and distinctive single malt that highlights both the identity and the evolving range of expression found at Akkeshi Distillery.
